Dear Kuyaboy,
Ikaw na rin ang nagsabi in one of our telephone conversations that the doctor said those bridges are not sufficient to sustain your heart and your heart will always be taxed in trying to pump blood in and out. Rolly is not a doctor. I don't know how a man with your level of intelligence can put your trust in him more than your own doctor. Every single doctor in our family is telling you that this surgery is necessary.
I just spoke to KuyaToy and he was telling me that Dennis and May believe that surgery is your only option. I spoke to Jun, Sylvia's husband and he also said that you need to undergo surgery to correct those blocked arteries. Gerry said the same thing and that is why he took the effort to bring you to Dr. Chuachiaco because he wanted you to be in good hands for your surgery. He said that your bullheadedness will not keep you alive and will in fact, cost you your life or be the cause of your being a burden to your immediate family in the near future (just like his friend Peewit was for 11 years before he succumbed to death.)
Kuyaboy, it is up to you to change your lifestyle but this should be after your surgery. You still need the surgery because just changing your lifestyle now will not correct the problem. You are only fooling no one but yourself into believing that. Are you so scared of surgery that you would rather believe that changing your diet and those little bridges will save your life without undergoing surgery? Does your family not matter to you that you are not willing to take the risk of surgery so you can live longer? What will Mona and the kids do when you are gone? How will they survive without you? What will Sophie do without you around? Are you that selfish?
You speak so much of God, but yet you don't trust Him. God has gifted you with the opportunity to have this condition taken cared of. He has given you so many warnings and chances and these are the blessings God has sent you. Yet you continue to ignore His warnings and continue to refuse His blessings.
I pray that you will find the courage to face your fears. I pray that you will not listen to others who lead you to believe that everything will be alright because it is not their life that is at stake. I pray that you love your family more than yourself and you will be willing to take the risk of going though surgery so you can live a longer life to be with them. I pray that God will guide you and enlighten you.
Love,
Yoly

Dear Yoly:
I admit I'm afraid of the operation like Rolly Leveriza was scared of his own valve surgery. He is not a doctor but the CoQ10 protected him from heart attack over the last two years. His defect is still there but he's grown stronger despite it with the help of CoQ10 to lead a normal life and go back to his business. I am not talking of guesswork here. This is hard track practical experience from a verifiable source, who happens to be a first cousin.
Surgery is still the only solution. I am laying all the groundwork to get it soon. God will guide me as to where and when and I pray that I could have it through the expert hands of Dr. Chuachiaco.
There are three aspects that I am relying on. First is the guidance and protection of God the Father, the Abba Krishna. Second I am sticking to the medicines prescribed to me including the statins for bad cholesterol. Third is the total lifestyle change including reducing my weight to get out of obesity, resuming a gradual exercise regimen by light walking for 20 minutes a day, taking it easy to control tension and stress, and taking Omega 3 fish oil and CoQ10 to protect my heart from attack and muscle damage.
I am fully committed to a low salt, low fat, low cholesterol diet and I don't take any meat at all. My bad cholesterol and triglycerides are at an all time low. My blood pressure is 130/80 and I keep it low with Concore, Blopress, and Norvasc. I take Plavix and Aspirin for blood thinners. That should all help to keep me alive until that opportune time in the near future when I can submit to a permanent surgical correction of my coronary blockage. The danger of waiting is exactly the same as the risk of the operation. In the meantime, I get the privilege of healing therapeutically as a long shot.
We all have to face risks especially around old age but the thing is to think carefully and use our heads instead of rushing headlong to the fire.
Thanks for your concern.
Love,
Boy

Dear KuyaBoy,
For whatever its worth, maybe it will help you to know about Susan's mother.
Susan's mother is now 80 years old and is going strong. She eats anything she likes as much as she likes. She loves chicharon and eats pork when she wants to. When her son advised her to take it easy in eating those foods that is supposedly "bad" for her, she said why? It would take another 70 years for these "bad” food to clog my arteries again and I don't think I will live another 70 years. Susan's mother had a triple by-pass 5 years ago at the age of 75 and her heart is in great shape and she is going strong. She will probably live past 90.
If you have surgery and get a by-pass, you can go on eating anything you want and as much as you want. This some might say is bad advice but think about it, It will take another 60 years for you to clog up those arteries and I don't think anyone wants to live up to 120 years old. Would you rather live a few more years by like what you said changing your lifestyle and deprive yourself of the good things and not even being guaranteed you will live that long?
I can only imagine how scary surgery is so I do not blame you for not wanting to have it. To me, what is scarier is having your condition and knowing that I could get a heart attack anytime. I am healthy as far as my heart is concerned but everyday I am scared that I might get a heart attack. If I could go to a doctor and tell him to give me a by-pass, I would do it just to reassure myself but I don't think any doctor would do that.
I know people older than you who have had a by-pass and they are all living a happy life. Neither will I lie and tell you there is no risk but the chance of success is very, very high and the reward is immeasurable.
Take care and we will pray you make the right choice.
Your brother, Manny

Dear Manny:
My youngest son posed the same question to me. He said wouldn't I love to go back to eating my favorite chicharon and live a normal life after an operation. The answer is the risk in an operation is not worth all the red meat especially at 61 years which can be medically challenged not only by cases of the heart but other ailments as well.
I intend to get an operation as a permanent solution to my block. I just want to fully prepare for it. I want no gray areas or question marks. The most delicate part is healing. With a chest wound, it could take two months to get back on my feet. I want all the marbles to be complete in my corner. I don’t want to go into a boxing bout lacking in training and logistics.
I am a scary cat but prayers always shore me up. Fear is useful because it makes you hesitate to think again. Solutions are always there to choose wisely and with determination. Timing is of the essence always which can turn defeat to victory or vice versa.
Your writing me with your own words of wisdom is such a boost to my morale. The psychosomatic benefit has already cured me of the malaise.
Thank you.

Dear Kuya Boy,
I don't know why you are postponing your operation. But if it is what I think it is, here are my thoughts.
After reading all these, let me tell you about daddy. He came to me here in Boston when he had this huge bulge in his stomach. I went with him to see the doctor, and this young Harvard doctor told him his problem was his heart. The doctor was young, and he was very straightforward --daddy was shocked and told me to get him another doctor!! We finally found an old doctor who was more personable. Daddy died the following year.
What shocked daddy? The doctor told him it was too late, there is nothing he can do anymore. Daddy waited too long to do something about his heart, which was by then scarred and barely functioning --thus the accumulation of liquid in his stomach (actually nutrition from what he ate which his heart was not strong enough to pump through his body; he was, in reality, starving since nothing was getting into his body). The doctor said he cannot do a bypass, it won't help. The heart was gone. And he cannot do a transplant, since daddy was too old and too weak.
You see, Kuya Boy, all those little heart attacks, sometimes you feel it, sometimes you don't, caused by the impairment of your vessels, slowly kills your heart. And one of this days (maybe sooner than later) there will be no heart to do a bypass for.
You and I, when we were young used to play basketball for hours, till late at night, and sometimes (actually most of the time) we would cramp from fatigue. You know how it felt the next day, those sore muscles, as if torn (which they most likely were) and overstretched. Imagine if we kept on doing that EVERYDAY. You could imagine what that would have done to our leg muscles. Most probably crippled us for life as those muscles became scarred from overuse.
Unfortunately, that is what you are doing to your heart --EVERYDAY.
I know it is very scary to have an operation. but I think it is scarier that you diminish your chance of surviving everyday that you postpone it. All those palliatives can help, but they are stilll just that --palliatives.
For what it's worth, let's learn from daddy. And if just for the convoluted logic Manny just proposed (which I agree with, by the way) and which daddy used to adhere to --that he lived to eat, not eat to live-- do it now, sooner than later.
As that crazy Mike used to say when played poker with us --what? Afraid to die?
Being afraid is awful, however it is natural for us to be fearful; but living in fear should not be the alternative option.
Good luck, hope this helps spur you to the right decision soonest.

Dear Toy:
I've had about three heart attack episodes. 30Sep09, 16Oct09, and 22Dec09. My latest echocardiogram on 22Dec09 showed no damage to my heart tissue and muscle.
My nuclear imaging perfusion does not tally with my angiogram. The nuclear imaging test with stress test shows that my heart is getting enough blood. There is no ischemia or starvation of blood to vital areas as opposed to the findings of the angiogram which shows my right artery blocked 99% and two left arteries blocked 80 to 90%.
The reason is that God the Father, I call Him the Abba Krishna; put a network of bridges and branches as alternate routes. These were confirmed in the angiogram in black and white and signed by the cardiologist. The doctor says there is no way to verify scientifically if they can perform and sustain me in the long term hence the need for immediate heart bypass.
Why the episodes if I am getting enough blood through the alternates? My high blood pressure is the problem. In the three cases, I was driving without air-conditioning in the car and inhaled all the exhaust fumes. Despite the three kinds of medications I take to control my high blood pressure, the stress and the pollution spiked it to cause my heart muscles to press and constrict the arteries conducting the blood. Hobbled by blocks as they already are, thus angina or pain for lack of blood to the heart muscle ensued.
I took Isordyl sub-lingual and the pain eased in two minutes during the second and third instances. The medication widens the arteries to allow the resumption of blood flow just in time before tearing of the tissues happens. Definitely the alternate bridges are fit only for a sedentary life without tension which is not practical.
These are the steps I have to take resolutely:
1) Pray to the Almighty God the Father AKA Abba Krishna to continue to protect and help me
2) I use only a half a teaspoon of salt a day to control my high blood pressure
3) I use only two teaspoons of olive oil or canola oil a day to control fat intake
4) I eliminated all kinds of meat from my diet and take only fish to lower my cholesterol
5) I take fruits and vegetables for vitamins, nutrients, and fiber
6) I take Blopress, Concore, and Norvasc to maintain my blood pressure at 120/80
7) I have given up driving outside of Merville but still carry Isordyl all the time
8) I plan to have my car fully air-conditioned and wear a mask while driving.
9) I take statins to control bad cholesterol
10) I take Plavix and aspirin as blood thinners to smooth the flow of blood through the small openings
11) I take Aprior two times a day to protect against angina
12) I plan to exit obesity by March and undertake an exercise regimen of walking in a gradual way
13) I researched the benefits of CoQ10 and also take heart in the testimony of Rolly Leveriza that it has protected him from heart attack for over two years after he decided to forgo his valve defect surgery. I now take CoQ10 two times a day
14) I researched the benefits of Omega 3 fish oil and now take it even with a remote chance that it can reduce the blockage by at least 1%.
15) I'm working on getting a grant or aid from PCSO to help defray the cost of my operation which is the only final solution.
I think with the above steps I'm doing the best there is to cope with my ailment. Pray for me that I will be victorious.
Thanks for your concern.
