My eldest son Ramon is giving up his promising career in the IT department of J.P. Morgan Chase Bank as a computer Applications Developer where he makes nearly USD 1,300 a month. At 29 years, his credentials and track record are enviable having piled up six certifications during his previous three year tenure at Accenture which led to his involvement in his present position which has spanned over two fruitful years with the retail banking support team.
When he was in the Ateneo High School it riled him to no end to be kidded by his classmates as a budding Jesuit scholastic or the type with the most potential and likely disposition. At the Ateneo College in Loyola Heights, he took to dorm life at Cervini Hall like a duck to water and enjoyed the daily twilight hikes around the campus as soon as the place quieted down under cover of protective shadows. After graduation, a grueling pace saw him working during the day and studying during the off hours every evening at the Ateneo Professional School in Makati City for his postgraduate course in Info Technology.
He’s not becoming a Jesuit but elected to join an order of communicators who are gearing up to launch an all out campaign to bring the Catholic Church up to speed in the Internet. The funny thing is that for the next two years Ramon will be in the forefront of fine tuning the set-up but he will be the one to pay them with a nominal tuition fee every month. If he passes the grade, then Ramon gets the chance to go back on a scholarship to study Theology for the next four years at his beloved Ateneo.
The last date of Ramon was a cute Japanese doll with a Japanese multinational outfit which sponsored a corporate communication skills seminar for their regional staff at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati City, Metro Manila. My only daughter, Lesley Leveriza, who shelved her acting career for economic reasons, then fell back on her communications and education degree from the Ateneo to clinch a training consultant job with the top outfit in the business, Guthrie Jensen, was assigned to conduct the week long affair. Coffee at Starbucks across the street led to a series of dinners and bar hops after a casual and chance introduction one afternoon after work. At the end of the inter-racial whirlwind bonding and crash course in getting to know you ritual, Ramon’s calling to the priesthood persisted.
When the Abba Krishna calls you, you can go round and round in circles to deny or delay it but there’s no escaping it. That’s what I told Ramon. When you are called that’s it, your goose is cooked. But Dad, he says, I’m worried about you and Mom, my share of the household expenses will be a drag on your already worrisome financial straits. Then he says, I’m leaving all my savings to you except the fund I have set aside for my tuition fee and related expenses for the next two years to help tide you over with my departure from the family fold. I said Ramon It is the Abba Krishna Who calls you, why should I worry about finances. He’s bigger and richer than Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, and David Rockefeller altogether.
Then Ramon says, but Dad you will lose that excellent medical insurance which is part of my benefit package at JP Morgan. I said Ramon, is there a better insurance than the one from the Creator Himself, the Abba Krishna?
